Challenge:
Addiction to adrenaline is a common but serious barrier to intimacy. Excess adrenaline produces overstimulated energy, skiddish behavior, and abrupt emotional changes that damage trust in a relationship. People cannot be truly connected and tantric in this mode because they are not relaxed and present.

We live in a society that values activity (male energy) more than relaxation (female energy). Addiction to adrenaline is the result of an overuse of male energy to the point where it becomes detrimental to our health — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Remedy:
Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is designed to help the body cope with stress when we are in “fight or flight” mode. It is unhealthy to be in fight or flight all the time, and many people are without knowing it. We become addicted to adrenaline by being in constant overdrive, pushing ourselves to do too much on a daily basis.

Symptoms of adrenaline addiction include irritability, mood swings, blood sugar imbalances, weight gain around the midsection, changes in sex drive, and cravings for stimulants such as sugar, refined carbs, caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine. Often people are unaware of this addiction because they have been in a longterm pattern of overextending themselves without taking adequate periods of rest. They run on empty and experience an artificial exhilarating adrenaline high rather than genuine life force energy or chi.

Addiction to adrenaline often comes from a fear of connecting with oneself and being emotionally vulnerable to others. In many ways, society rewards this behavior by pumping more sugar and caffeine into our systems in order to extract more money and productivity from us. Most of us are in denial about our addiction or in some phase of recovery from it. Adrenaline addiction can be healed by balancing the male and female energies within and by valuing "being" as much as "doing". When we are willing to be in balance, we become more emotionally and spiritually available to ourselves and our partners.
